A: A fake book is a collection of many songs written in leadsheet style.
That is, there is the melody line and chord changes.
The bass player reads from chord changes,
the guitarist reads from the same book playing the
chords and or reading the melody as does the pianist.
Q: Is it Important for a bassist to be able to read from a fakebook?
A: A good bassist must be able to create bass lines from chord symbols
if he/she expects to play alot. And you need resources of many songs
so when you are called on to play something you do not know, you run to the
fakebook and your CD collection and pray it is there. Grab your self a fake
book of songs you like and try playing some basslines against some of the music.
Bring the book over to the piano and try playing the melody or hack
away at the changes.
Q: Is it true that most professional own dozens of these books?
A: After you purchase a fake book it usually stays with you a long time. You may almost look at
it like a piece of equipment.
